2012 County Seasonal Walks
April 1 through September 30
In October 1999 the Virginia Volkssport Association (VVA) held an event at Breaks Interstate Park. This event was the last one in a program where the VVA hosted an event in all counties in the state, with the exception of those counties where events were hosted by Virginia Clubs. The events are being revisited. The VVA is offering an opportunity for those who missed out the first time to come and walk and finish coloring in their "Virginia is for Volkssport Lovers" t-shirt.
Here are this year's offerings.
Carroll County - The Hillsville Diner was brought to Hillsville in 1946 from Mount Airy, NC. The classic streetcar-style diner is said to be the oldest diner in Virginia. The diner is a 1920s Jerry O’Mahony model diner. Legend states that while the diner was residing in Mount Airy, NC that Andy Griffith frequently went there. Today, the VFW Labor Day Show is the biggest event that is held in Carroll County. It sees nearly 500,000 people each year and the town of Hillsville practically comes to a halt due to the traffic, vendors, and tourists. Locals enjoy meeting the interesting people from all over the world who come to this event to find collectibles, knick knacks, clothing, and more. The roots of Hillsville are obvious from the rolling fields of cattle, cabbage, and other produce. Also the Farmer’s Market is a good sign of things from the past. Hillsville began as a trading post along a stagecoach road and exported agricultural products including rye, wheat, and corn. The area that is now known as Hillsville at one time was called Cranberry Plains. In the late 1820s or early 1830s the town was renamed Hillsville in honor of the Hill Family. After the town was designated as the county seat in 1842 it was briefly called Carrollton in honor of John Carroll, the state legislator who pushed for the creation of Carroll County. However, the name Hillsville was stuck with the residents and Carrollton soon became Hillsville once more. The webiste for Hillsville is: http://www.hillsville.com/index.htm. The trail will be thru the town of Hillsville. This trail will count for Carroll County in the "I walked along the Crooked Road program" sponsored by the VVA, as well as Carroll County in your Virginia county book.
City of Galax - Daylight hours only. This trail will be thru the City of Galax and part of the New River Trail. This walk counts for the City of Galax in the "I walked along the Crooked Road" program sponsored by the VVA. Galax has been claimed as the "bluegrass capital of the world." The Galax Commercial Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Galax, Virginia is the gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The City is rich with tradition, shopping, recreation and scenic beauty. A visit to Galax offers everything from quaint downtown shops to hiking and Old Time Bluegrass Music festivals. Galax is home to the largest Old Time Bluegrass Fiddler's Convention as well as the New River Trail. The website for Galax is http://www.visitgalax.com/galaxvirginiatourism.html.
Floyd County - Floyd County is a unique mountain community known for its music, its natural beauty, its arts, and its diverse, caring people. Located atop the Blue Ridge Plateau in southwestern Virginia, Floyd County is a haven removed from the rush of urbanity, yet alive with the sounds, colors and textures of rural life. The Bug Book Computer Museum (A “Smithsonian quality” historical collection of microcomputers (pre-1980)) is located in Floyd. A couple of website for Floyd are: http://www.visitfloyd.org/Life_in_Floyd.php and http://www.floydcova.org/index.shtml. This trail will be thru the town of Floyd. This walk will count for Floyd County in the "I walked along the Crooked Road" special program that the VVA sponsors.
Franklin County - Rocky Mount, Virginia, a little uptown... a little downtown... a lot to offer! It's a small town experience you won't soon forget. Rocky Mount is the Eastern Gateway to the Crooked Road: Virginia's Heritage Music Trail. The Town of Rocky Mount, Virginia set in the beautiful rolling hills of the western Blue Ridge Mountains, has been the seat of Franklin County since its formation in 1786. Bordered by serene farmlands and majestic forested ridges, Rocky Mount is a thriving small town that serves as the county's government, service, and business center. The county courthouse is a prominent local landmark. It overlooks a community characterized by gracious churches, vital business districts, charming neighborhoods and winding roads. The walk will be through the town of Rocky Mount. The website for Rocky Mount is: http://www.rockymountva.org/. This event will count towards the "I walked along the crooked road" program that the VVA is sponsoring.
